INSIGHTS

One Kenyan EdTech role offers a useful glimpse into how Learning & Development, Instructional Design and digital learning careers are evolving.

Every once in a while, a job description tells us more about where an industry is going than a report does. EIDU’s Senior Learning Officer role is one of those opportunities.

Everything you need to design a course that actually works — 32 pages of worksheets, 30 AI prompts, and launch checklists

At first glance, it is a senior education role. Look closer, and you find something broader: instructional design, learning strategy, blended learning, teacher capacity development, digital learning, data, research and programme improvement, all within one position.

That tells us something important about where Learning & Development is heading.

The learning professional is becoming more strategic

EIDU expects the Senior Learning Officer to lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of learning and capacity-development programmes. That is very different from simply creating training materials.

The role involves building scalable training models, designing blended learning approaches, overseeing curricula and digital content, conducting needs assessments and improving programmes based on evidence.

The question is shifting from “can you create a good course?” to something more demanding:

Can you design a learning intervention that solves a real problem, works in context and produces measurable improvement?

01

Instructional design is moving beyond content

EIDU’s brief includes curriculum development, facilitator guides, digital content, toolkits and self-directed resources, but these activities sit within a larger programme.

The instructional designer increasingly needs to understand the problem behind the request, the learners, the context, the delivery environment and how success will be measured. Instructional design is becoming less about producing content and more about designing learning systems.

02

Digital learning needs pedagogy

EIDU expects the role to provide pedagogical leadership in developing digital learning platforms and tools. Putting content online is not automatically digital learning.

Effective digital learning requires understanding how people learn, how practice and feedback work, how cognitive load affects learners and how technology can support, not replace, good pedagogy.

03

Learning at scale requires a different mindset

The role involves scalable, sustainable training models for teachers, government officers and internal teams, combining face-to-face, digital and coaching-based approaches.

Designing for 20 people is one thing. Designing for thousands across different locations requires quality assurance, standardisation, localisation, facilitator support, monitoring and sustainability. This is where instructional design starts becoming learning systems design.

04

Data and research are becoming part of the job

The Senior Learning Officer is expected to analyse training data, support dashboards, track effectiveness, run pilots and work with qualitative and quantitative evidence.

Modern L&D professionals increasingly need to answer: did the learning work, what changed, what evidence do we have, and what should we improve. Learning analytics and evaluation are becoming valuable extensions of the instructional designer’s toolkit.

05

Context matters

The role requires a deep understanding of Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with experience in programmes such as Tayari and Tusome seen as an advantage.

Global learning principles are useful. Combining them with deep knowledge of the Kenyan education and training environment can make your expertise far more valuable.
